Safety, side effects & interactions
Updated October 2026 · How we review
"Natural" doesn't mean risk-free. Adaptogens can cause side effects and interact with medicines.
Talk to your doctor first if you
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
- Take thyroid, blood pressure, diabetes, blood-thinning, sedative, antidepressant or immune-suppressing medicines
- Have a thyroid, autoimmune, liver or bleeding condition, or bipolar disorder
- Have surgery coming up
- Are buying for a child or teen
Common side effects
Stomach upset, headache, trouble sleeping or drowsiness, depending on the herb. Stop and contact a doctor if you notice yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual fatigue, which can be signs of liver problems.
Report problems
Serious side effects from supplements can be reported to the FDA through MedWatch.
